Laura and Max

Presentation Arts Centre, Enniscorthy
Doors open at 6:30, play starts at 7
Trauma and grief can take many forms. Laura and Max examines their impact on two people who are sharing a house in Wexford town. Laura is a widowed American trans woman in her late 40s. She’s renting a room to Max, a bigender neurodivergent person in their 20s who grew up in an unsafe home. In trying to find their way in a life they didn’t plan, each will have to confront the intense emotional realities that come from surviving prejudices, loss and lack of empathy. However, the power of these past traumas threatens to overwhelm them and the fragile connection they share.
Laura and Max is a one-hour play with no intermission. It deals with gender nonconformity, neurodivergence, and isolation. The script includes references to prejudice, transphobia, violence, death, loss, the COVID-19 pandemic, and economic hardship. There is some dialogue that audience members may find upsetting, including threats and abuse. The play uses the genre of horror to present psychological realities that arise with not conforming to familial and societal expectations.
