Wexford Pride Soapbox Protest

Wexford Pride is excited to announce the return of our Soapbox Protest! In June 2023 we held our very first Soapbox Event on Wexford Quay. This action aims to invite LGBTQIA+ community members to speak about their experiences as LGBTQIA+ people in Co. Wexford. The Soapbox is the political extension of our Pride in The Park celebration, to highlight the issues and experiences of LGBTQIA+ people in Co.Wexford and claim our space in the process.

Event Details

🕑 When: 2 p.m. - 4 p.m., Sunday 18th August

📍Location: Bandstand, Peters' Sq, Wexford Town (outside Red Books)

What to Expect

Drawing on the tradition of ‘soapbox’ speech-making, individuals are invited to express their experience via a written speech, spoken word piece or any other form of expression that feels appropriate or comfortable. You also do not need to prepare a speech in advance, community members are welcome to speak from the heart in the moment too. Last year community members spoke to the challenges of accessing gender-affirming care, finding and sharing in community, coming out, accessing LGBTQIA+ representation literature for young people and more.

No prior sign-up is required, just show up on the day! We recognise that it may not be safe or comfortable for some to speak freely about their experiences, if you would like to contribute your words but are unable to speak on the day, we are happy to accept a submission to be read on your behalf on the day via wexfordpride@gmail.com.

The safety, inclusion and participation of LGBTQIA+ folks, particularly those less heard from within our community, is paramount. We have zero tolerance for racism and bigotry and openly welcome BIPOC, Traveller & Roma, and immigrant groups. This is also a neuro-affirming space. We encourage folks to take movement breaks, stim, and use sensory aids as needed. Allies are welcome and strongly encouraged to attend and support this action!

All forms of participation are encouraged, bring your flags and your voice! Whether you choose to speak on the day, contribute your words in another way or can lend your support and encouragement to others - your presence matters!

Why It Matters

While we have made strides in furthering LGBTQIA+ equality in recent years, we know that many queer people continue to face the challenges of social marginalisation and oppression - be it through an unfit transgender healthcare system, increased economic and housing inequality and growing threats toward those who seek safety in our communities. The Soapbox aims to remain connected to the political roots of the pride movements that acknowledged the realisation of equality and liberation for all cannot be achieved without standing in solidarity with one another and acting collectively to ignite change.
